Biomechanics of the Wrist-Two Part series

 Presented by:

 Shrikant J. Chinchalkar, M.Th.O, B.Sc.OT, OTR, CHT

Part 2 – November 6th, 2021-3.00 pm to 5.30 pm EST

  1. Management of Carpal Dislocations and Instabilities
  2. Management of Triangular Fibrocartilage Complex – (TFCC)

Course Description

The wrist is an intricate joint with complex motion and function and is comprised of 15 articulations. These articulations are formed by various anatomical structures with varying degrees of curvatures and congruencies. The wrist joint is supported by the 24 ligamentous structures, controlled by 24 musculotendinous units, and by the proprioceptive input arising from various ligaments. The meticulous normal functioning of the hand is dictated by the stability and mobility of the carpus, allowing the hand to grasp objects in a variety of wrist and forearm positions.  Carpal dislocations and instabilities are common injuries, especially in young adults. Most carpal disruptions are caused by trauma; however, conditions such as congenital laxity, infection, inflammatory processes (rheumatoid arthritis), or congenital defects can also contribute to instabilities. Carpal dislocation and instability injury patterns can be easily misdiagnosed, because an exact diagnosis is often difficult to establish. If such injuries are not correctly diagnosed, this can eventually lead to premature degeneration and arthrosis at radio-carpal and mid-carpal joints due to altered carpal kinematics. The 5-hour course on the Biomechanics of the Wrist Joint discusses normal carpal kinematics, pathologic carpal instabilities and the therapeutic management

The classic feature of this course includes:

  • Hands-on drawing of the wrist and carpal ligaments to facilitate understanding of synchronous carpal motion and the understanding of Volar and Dorsal Intercalated (VISI & DISI) instabilities
  • Cadaver videos, clinical and Fluoroscopic videos of normal and altered carpal kinematics to simplify understanding of the complex wrist and carpal kinematics.

Shrikant has taught this course live in Korea, Hong Kong, India, UCLA and 12 other States in the US and in 4 provinces in Canada.

Course Objectives

Upon completion of the webinar the participants will have:

  1. A thorough knowledge of the Distal Radio-Ulnar, TFCC, Wrist and Carpal anatomy
  2. A detailed understanding of the normal forearm and carpal kinematics
  3.  A thorough knowledge of Scapho-Lunate and Luno-Triquitral ligament injuries producing VISI and DISI patterns of instability and its effect on carpal motion
  4. A detailed understanding of ulnar sided wrist pain, ECU subluxation, mid-carpal instability and successfully plan a conservative and post-surgical treatment program for these conditions
  5. An understanding of TFCC injuries and the management of traumatic and degenerative TFCC conditions

5 hours continuing education credit

All content of this webinar series is accepted as Category A credit toward recertification by The Hand Therapy Certification Commission (HTCC)
